Mental health in the electronic music industry has been a major concern for the past few years. Ever since we lost Avicii in 2018, artists and industry professionals have started talking about the struggles behind the scenes.
Many documentaries and articles have been written about the crisis and there has been an encouraging increase in discussions about mental health. Now that we’ve finally started to open up, we can start talking about what to do to fix this problem.
As someone who works directly with artists and industry professionals to help them overcome these difficulties, I am on the front lines of this crisis. Some of my clients have made headlines at the biggest festivals and venues in the world and behind the scenes they are struggling like the rest of the world.
As the CDC warns of a wave of mental health issues to come, calling it the coming mental health pandemic, it’s clear artists aren’t the only ones suffering.

Mental health will be a huge topic as it is one of the main threats to the sustainability of our scene. So we kick things off with some of the habits that help top artists maintain their success. Because success is a way of life based on healthy habits.
7 Lifestyle Habits of Successful Artists and Entrepreneurs
You don’t have to wait until you have depression or an anxiety attack to focus on improving your mental health. Increasing your mental toughness can help you boost your creativity and focus, improve your relationships, and enjoy life more.
Many top performers in music, sports, and business have habits and routines that they swear by to help them succeed. Incorporating a few of them into your life can have a big impact on your life.
They meditate regularly
Many top performers are regular meditators.
It just works. Mediation can help you show up more often at a high level. It works wonders for reducing anxiety and is great for improving focus and creativity. It can also improve your mood, improve your relationships, and increase your enjoyment of life. I meditate every morning and most of my clients do too.
If you want to improve your life, developing a meditation practice is a game-changer. There are countless forms and styles of meditation, so don’t be discouraged if you find it difficult at first.
Many also do breathing
Breathing has become all the rage among biohackers and those looking to gain an edge. Breathing exercises can help you reap all the benefits of meditation in less time.
Science is only just beginning to understand how it all works although the practice is as old as time.

They have mastered the art of relaxation
Taking the time to fully unwind and relax is extremely important for those at the highest level of performance in business, art and sport.
Our minds get tired just like our bodies, so learning to become a master of relaxation will give you more mental energy when it’s needed. In these modern times of chaos, many find it difficult to turn it off, and it can be difficult to take time off.
Many top performers take time out in nature to recharge, some get massages or baths (yes, even guys), and some prefer floating tanks. Finding your way to relaxation is the key to following the practice and soon you will feel the benefits and find it easier to concentrate when it’s time to work.
They prefer sleep
We’ve been tricked into thinking that top performers don’t sleep. Sure, there are those in the “hustle culture” who push a sleepless narrative, however, most consistent top performers know the importance of a good night’s rest.
Sleep deprivation is at the root of many mental health problems and can increase the likelihood of anxiety and panic attacks.
A regular sleep schedule gives the brain time to catch up and process and can boost creativity and mental stamina. Many of us in and around music love late nights, so make sure to catch up and try to be as consistent as possible are my recommendations.
I work with several touring artists and they have been able to find great benefits in improving their quality of sleep without sacrificing those sleepless nights.
They eat healthy and take supplements
You might be surprised to learn that many top artists and entrepreneurs eat super healthy. Everything you put in your body has an effect on how you feel and on your mind.
Top players in all areas are beginning to consider nutrition to improve their game.
Eating a healthy diet and taking the right supplements can help you avoid brain fog and regain clarity. It can also have a huge impact on energy levels. Nutrition is often the first thing that goes out the window when many try to level up and it ends up holding people back. So if you want to kick things into high gear, start with your nutrition.
They develop self-discipline
It’s not just top athletes who rely on discipline. The old days of the party hard rock star are long gone and many musicians and entrepreneurs are realizing the benefits of strong self-discipline.
It means cutting back on some of the things that seem like a “normal” part of life.
Alcohol, porn, smoking and social media are well known to cause mental suffering. Reducing or eliminating them as much as possible can go a long way in helping you achieve a new level of performance.
They have support
Having someone you can talk to who understands what you’re dealing with is key to success and improved mental health.
Sometimes life can seem unmanageable and that goes for those at the top as well. In almost every hero movie there is a mentor or guide who helps the hero on their journey and the majority of successful artists I know have worked with life coaches and say that has been one of best investments they have ever made.
People from all walks of life use coaches to help them improve their health, deepen their relationships, and achieve new levels of professional success. As a life coach for top artists and entrepreneurs, I too have support systems and mentors in my life.
