A documentary about two Robert Downeys

There is no doubt that Robert Downey Jr. has become much more famous than his father ever was. But at the time, Robert Downey Sr. was an acclaimed and respected independent director, whose credits include the 1969 cult classic Putney Swipe and 1972 Greaser’s Palace.

If you know Robert Downey Jr. but don’t know his father, Sr. offers a unique opportunity to learn about the latter through the eyes of the former. Downey Jr. produced this documentary about his father’s life and career, as well as their complex relationship. After a very successful run on the fall festival circuit, the film premiered on netflix next month. You can watch the trailer below:

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

Documentary filmmaker Chris Smith (American Movie) presents a lovingly irreverent portrayal of the life, career, and final days of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., whose rebellious spirit has infused decades of counterculture cinema. “Sr.” expands the lens of Downey’s art to the life he was deeply connected with, including an intimate examination of his relationship with his son Robert Downey, Jr. Shot over a three-year period, the film truly pays homage to Senior’s non-linear, outlaw approach, including capturing his decision to embark on his own concurrent and final film project. Smith’s portrait of a family and an artist is a meditation on life as surreal as it is sentimental, a celebration of artistic creation without rules that throws down its own rulebook along the way.

Sr. premieres on Netflix on December 2.
