IMDb TV announces rebranding to Amazon Freevee

Freevee will add original films to a growing slate of content with a green light for romantic comedy Love Accidentally, starring Brenda Song and Aaron O’Connell

Currently available in the US and UK, Freevee will launch in Germany later this year

CULVER CITY, Calif. – April 13, 2022 – Today, Amazon’s free streaming service announced a name change to Amazon Freevee, the new name for IMDb TV, effective April 27. Over the past two years, ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) has grown rapidly – tripling the number of monthly active users – thanks to rapid distribution on living room and mobile devices, a growing list of originals, an always-updating library of highly sought-after movies and TV shows, and over 60 FAST channels. After a successful launch in the UK last September, Freevee will continue its international expansion with a launch in Germany later this year.

Freevee will grow its Originals catalog by 70% in 2022, including the longest-running Original series spin-off for Prime Video, Bosch: Legacy, premiering May 6; a new interior design series, Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis; the comedy series Sprung by Greg Garcia; Australian crime drama Troppo; and High School, a scripted series adapted for television by Clea DuVall, produced by Plan B, and based on the New York Times best-selling memoirs by Grammy-nominated platinum artists Tegan and Sara Quin. Amazon’s free streaming service will announce additional green lights during its NewFronts presentation on May 2.

“Over the past two years, we have experienced phenomenal growth in our AVOD service and are committed to providing our audience with premium free-to-consumer content,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We look forward to building on this momentum with a growing roster of inventive and broadly engaging originals, and we’re excited to establish Freevee as the premier AVOD service with content that audiences crave.”

“Customers are increasingly turning to streaming ad-supported premium content, and we’ve developed Freevee to provide them with highly sought-after content with half the commercials of traditional television,” said Ashraf Alkarmi, director of Freevee. “Our new name clearly communicates who we are: an easy-to-navigate streaming service available free to users whenever and wherever they choose to watch some of the best original and licensed content available.”

Additionally, the free streaming service will add exclusive original films to its already strong roster, starting with a greenlight order for workplace romantic comedy Love Accidentally, starring Brenda Song and Aaron O’Connell. In Love Accidentally, Alexa (Song) and Jason (O’Connell) fight over a promotion at their ad agency when each of their loved ones breaks up with them. Thinking she texted a friend, Alexa mistakenly sends Jason a heartbroken message. The two start an anonymous relationship via text without either knowing who the other really is. When the truth comes out, can they put their rivalry aside and let true love prevail? Love Accidentally also features Denise Richards and Maxwell Caulfield, while Barry Barnholtz, Zelma Kiwi and Jeffrey Schenck serve as executive producers.

Spanning drama and comedy, scripted and unscripted, originals currently available on the service include buddy-cop drama Pretty Hard Cases, with a second season dropping April 22; the heist drama Leverage: Redemption; Top Class sports docuseries UNINTERRUPTED: The Life and Times of the Sierra Canyon Pioneers; the spy thriller Alex Rider; the musical docuseries Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary; and the wacky true-crime docuseries Bug Out. Additionally, the service features Judy Justice, a court show led by TV icon Judge Judy Sheindlin, with an order of 120 Season 1 episodes. Judy Justice will continue to bring customers new episodes every day. of the week until April 15 and was picked up for a second season.

Previously, Amazon’s free streaming service announced greenlight orders for Primo, the coming-of-age comedy from Michael Schur and Shea Serrano, and On Call, the half-hour procedural drama from the prolific television producer Dick Wolf. Additionally, the service announced an AVOD first by licensing an agreement with NBCU guaranteeing an exclusive network window for films from Universal Filmed Entertainment Group’s 2020-21 cinema slate, including titles such as Dolittle, The Invisible Man, Promising Young Woman, F9 (Fast & Furious 9), as well as the rights to a set of animated films, including Sing 2.
