Denise Crosby’s Star Trek Documentary ‘Trekkies’ Coming to Blu-ray in May
Fans will want to pick up Trekkies when it’s re-released in May.
Older fans may remember Denise Crosby’s iconic documentary Trekkies. The film documented the lives of several die-hard fans while covering the convention scene in what was an under-explored set of events compared to now.
At a time when the internet wasn’t used by most people, let alone had access to it, there wasn’t that awareness that fans have today. The idea that doctors, lawyers, and athletes enjoy these more “dorky” forms of entertainment has been quite derided. Trek fans have often been mocked and put down due to the lack of social awareness that currently exists.
Crosby took a big step forward in highlighting the humanity of the fans, but also the fun. It’s one of the best documentaries ever made, and given how common they are today, modern fans may not realize how rare and intriguing they were back in the day.
So it’s great to know that Crosby, who was once a lead actress in Star Trek: The Next Generation, will see her documentary about the fans of a show that made her an icon, will get a Blu-ray release at time for his 25th birthday.
Yell! Factory will remaster the film and update everything it can with modern technology. The film is set to be re-released on Blu-ray on May 24, 2022. You can pre-order it now through Amazon.

Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Denise Crosby hosts this often hilarious documentary about Star Trek’s “fan-nomenon.” Featuring interviews with hundreds of dedicated fans and Star Trek actors such as James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, Walter Koenig, Kate Mulgrew, Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner and George Takei, the film creates an entertaining and endearing portrait of the flagship series. that has touched the lives of people all over the world.
“We are delighted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our film with this newly restored edition,” said director Roger Nygard. Denise Crosby added, “We can’t wait for fans of this iconic series to return or experience for the first time how generations of fans have been brought together through their shared love of these stories.”
Trekkies was one of the first real looks at diehard Star Trek fans.
There are dozens of documentaries fans should watch, one of my favorites is Captains, which was hosted by William Shatner. Shatner shopped around and spoke to various captains of the Star Trek universe to get their take on the whole experience. It’s really wonderful.
It’s just one of many, and that’s what makes Trek so fascinating. There are so many behind-the-scenes, fan-centric documentaries that show the deeper side of Star Trek and while Trekkies wasn’t the first Trek-centric documentary, it was the first I can remember that told fan story, from the perspective of a true Star Trek veteran.
