HarperCollins revealed the Rings of Power covers for Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books in early July.

They tweeted, “A new legend begins…The Rings of Power hits Prime Video September 2nd, and these all-new Lord of the Rings Bound Editions are available now.”

“Add these to your collection and immerse yourself in Middle-earth,” they added.

Then a few days later, they announced via Facebook an omnibus edition bringing together the three books in one.

They wrote: “Begin your journey to Middle-earth. This new one-volume paperback edition features all three titles that make up JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Available August 16.

Lord of the Rings fans have ridiculed both editions with one Twitter user describing the omnibus version as “bacteria attaching themselves to healthy tissue”.

Twitter user Stig Kenobi wrote: “Amazon is back. Sticking their fake fan-fiction shit on Tolkien’s legitimate work. Basically the book comes with as**t-stain on it. This time on a paperback which will be released on August 18.

He followed that up in a later tweet, writing, “They are trying to soft market their spoof on everything Tolkien now. Like bacteria that attach themselves to healthy tissue.

Now the Tolkien fan created a Change.org petition demanding Harper Collins, Amazon and The Tolkien Estate will “stop selling ‘Rings of Power’ book covers”.

The petition states: “HarperCollins, Amazon and, as rights holders, The Tolkien Estate have unjustly co-opted the The Lord of the Rings with promotional material covers for Amazon power rings. This show is not an adaptation, but Amazon is creating something new within a pre-made setting designed by Tolkien with which Amazon is using creative license.

He continues, “For the most part, this show has a lot more content from showrunners, writers, producers, and modern business executives. For example, many characters in the series, Disa, Halbrand, Arondir, Bronwyn, Theo, Eleanor Brandyfoot, Sadoc Burrows, Poppy Proudfellow, Adar, etc., are completely original Amazon creations involved in their own originally embellished stories . That’s nine characters, a whole community of Amazon original characters that we know of only from pre-release promotional material. Regardless of anyone’s position or opinion on The Rings of Power, it is an entirely separate entity from The Lord of the Rings.”

Addressing the book covers specifically, he notes, “There is concern regarding the use of these book covers in question. With the likely inevitability of The Rings of Power iconography being incorporated into wide cultural use online, in videos, posts, communities, memes, in art, in stores, on posters, t-shirts, merchandise, games, book covers, theme parks, or whatever else may come dressing Tolkien’s original work, here meaning body text that contain his Legendary as can be found in such texts as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion, The History of the Middle East. earth, and elsewhere, is inappropriate because it helps dominate culturally conscious acceptance of Amazon’s creation as part of Tolkien’s body of work.

“It would be a tragedy if his works were rubbed and colored like a palimpsest, confusing and confusing them with the upcoming Amazon original series.” the details of the petition.

He then quotes Christopher Tolkien regarding the marketing of his father’s Lord of the Rings: “To quote Christopher Tolkien, ‘Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed in the absurdity of our times. The chasm between the beauty and the seriousness of the work, and what it has become, overwhelmed me. Commercialization has negated the aesthetic and philosophical impact of creation. There’s only one solution for me: turn your head away.

From there, the petition lists four demands. They are:

  1. Request that all Amazon-related coverage for The Rings of Power be removed entirely
  2. That all Lord of the Rings e-book covers with power rings iconography be immediately restored with different cover images, and that the power rings related covers here be removed entirely as well
  3. Any printing and propagation of these covers by Amazon, Harper Collins, Tolkien Estate or any other body responsible for the management of Tolkien’s works cease entirely now and henceforth
  4. All future promotional material or iconography for The Rings of Power remains entirely separate and will never be used on or in JRR Tolkien’s published texts The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Story of the Middle-earth, and all subsequent publications of works by JRR Tolkien containing information about his Legendarium

As of this writing, the petition has received 165 signatures.
