The Freep Film Festival returns in spring and reveals 2022 dates
The Freep Film Festival on Wednesday unveiled plans for its 2022 festival, including a return to its traditional place in the spring calendar.
In 2021, the festival was held in September, a shift largely in response to the pandemic. The 2022 dates of the festival – from April 27 to May 1 – represent a homecoming of the first semester of the year, where it has been held since its creation in 2014.
The festival film lineup will be announced in mid-March. As always, offers will focus on documentaries, many of which feature strong local ties or interests.
A hallmark of the festival is the engagement activities built around the films, especially the in-depth conversations led by the journalists at Free Press. These discussions with filmmakers, film subjects and community members will continue, along with other related activities including parties, music and free educational events for the film community.
The 2021 festival included in-person screenings at various venues in Detroit and two suburbs. It also featured online streaming of most of the programming. This hybrid approach – films available in theaters and at home – is expected to return in 2022.
Many festival partners are also expected in 2022, including the Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Birmingham 8 Powered by Emagine, the Redford Theater and the Michigan Science Center.
The festival’s artistic team is currently working on the programming.

The Freep Film Festival is an invite-only event, but its programmers are always interested in hearing about documentaries that might be suitable. This particularly includes films set in Detroit, Michigan or the Midwest, or those focusing on topics of particular relevance to the region. The festival also frequently features documentaries created by Detroiters or Michiganders, or filmmakers who grew up in the state.
Interested filmmakers should send an email to [email protected] with basic details on their documentary, whether completed or in progress. The programming team will contact you if you are interested in the film.
