Virender Sehwag shares fake news on Twitter suggesting Hima Das won 400m gold at CWG 2022, then deletes tweet
Differentiating fact from fiction can be very tricky in the age of social media. Although there is so much information circulating on the internet, not everything one consumes is true. Leaving aside the less aware, but even 2011 Cricket World Cup winning cricketer Virender Sehwag fell victim to believing the fake to be true.
A similar incident happened on Saturday. The former India fly-half shared a tweet on social media congratulating Hima Das on winning a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Commonwealth Games 2022. However, once he realized that he had spread the wrong information, he was quick to delete the tweet,
Several screenshots of his tweet have surfaced on social media, however.
This isn’t the first time Sehwag has shared misinformation on social media. The most reported image is the image he used to honor the martyrs of the Galwan Valley.
While the news of Das winning the medal was not true, India fell short in the medal tally with Sanket Sargar picking up a silver medal in the men’s 55kg weightlifting. The 21-year-old successfully lifted a total of 248kg and came second by a margin of just 1 kilogram with Malaysia’s Aniq Mohammad taking the gold.
Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will be in action later today on what promises to be an exciting day for the Indian contingent.
